How phone voice agents work, and how they fail
Plain-English guides for people who build voice agents. Answer first, sources named.
Flagship study
Testing voice agents on UK accents over phone audio
Why speech recognition errors rise on phone-quality audio and regional accents, what published studies found, and how to test your own agent.

How we credit sources
Every claim links to where it came from. We name the authors, quote only what the terms allow, and say when we have not tested something ourselves. Each guide ends with the same box: the sources with the date each was read, who wrote it, and when it was last checked.
Start with these terms
- Barge-in, the caller talking while the agent is still speaking.
- Endpointing, deciding that the caller has finished.
- Voice-to-voice latency, the gap the caller actually hears.
- Word error rate, the share of words a transcript gets wrong.
